Zaragoza 2 (Pages 59 - 89)

 SPOILERS!!!

Don Jose, Agustín's father, is incensed that Tío Candiola is the only citizen who has not given anything for the war effort. So he makes Agustin and Gabriel join him and a mob to force the man. Agustin is ill at ease and pretends to lag behind with a twisted foot. When they knock at the door, Candiola appears, and when Don José demands he sell them the flour at the established price, the man refuses, wanting more money. Then Jose pushes him and throws him to the floor. The crowd breaks into the house and grabs the sacks of flour. Mariquilla glares at them and when don José gives her the money, she throws it to his face.

The bombs keep falling, and when one almost hits the Candiola's home, Agustin and Gabriel manage to get there. To Agustin's relief the house stands untouched, and the maid sneaks them inside. When Mariquilla sees Agustin, she says that she got a glimpse of him when the mob took her father, and he did not defend her father. Agustin claims he did not see anything, and Mariquilla keeps saying that the man who illtreated her father is cruel and horrible. Agustin does not dare to say that the man is his own father. Mariquilla admits that her father has not helped Zaragoza in the war effort, and he even dismissed two injured men, one of whom died, and that makes her very sad. Agustin says that his parents will never approve of their engagement, and he says that they need to elope and live somewhere else because she needs to get rid of the reputation that her father has given her.

After that, Agustin and Gabriel leave, and when don Jose sees them, he scolds them, calling them cowards and urge them to join the fight.
