New Book - Gerona (Pages 1 - 17) - Episodios Nacionales 7 - by Benito Pérez Galdós

First Published: 1 January 1874

Gabriel travels with the army to Andalucia, and one of his fellow soldiers is Andresillo Marijuán, who tells him about the war in Gerona. So this story is told from the perspective of Andrés.

Andrés lived under the roof of Cristobal Mongat, a locksmith. When the man died, he left four orphans, twenty-year-old Siseta, ten-year-old Badores, six-year-old Monalet, and baby Gasparó. The four siblings had nothing, so Andrés used his earnings as a soldier to support the family. He and Siseta had and understanding to marry, and he promised that he would take them to his farm in Aragon.

The neighbour upstairs was Pablo Nomdedeu, a doctor, whose daughter Josefina was very sick. The girl was engaged to her cousin, but a bomb fell in the café that they were in, killing the young man. Josefina was left totally deaf and with a weak constitution. Talks about war set her nerves on edge, so her father lied to her, saying that the war was over.
