Amelia Winn is a nurse, and one night she is walking Stacey, a woman who has been beaten up by her husband. They walk to the car park, and suddenly, a car appears and dashes towards them.

Two years later we learn that the car who ran them over killed Stacey, and Amelia was left totally deaf. Everybody thought that the person driving the car was Stacey's brutish husband, but that proved wrong, and the person who hit them was never found. The accident caused her to fall into depression and become an alcoholic. Her husband is divorcing her, and thanks to the help of her friend, Jake, who is a detective, she is gradually recovering.

One of the things that Amelia likes is to paddlesurf with her dog, Stitch. When they are doing that, she falls when some kind of vessel veers closely. Then her dog starts acting strangely, and Amelia realises that the dog is pointing at something. What she see is the body of a woman, a woman she knows, a former colleague, Gwen Locke. Amelia uses her mobile to alert the authorities, explaining that she can't hear. Some twenty minutes later an officer arrives, and then some more cars, and one of the officers is her friend, Jake.

It is obvious that Gwen has been murdered because there is blood on her body, and Amelia wonders who would want her dead. She even considers the idea that since they worked in the domestic violence ward, there are people who may want to prevent them to testify. And maybe the person who ran her over is the same who killed Gwen, but after contemplating this scenario, Amelia thinks it is too far-fetched.
