Not a Sound 4 - The End (Pages 219 - end)

RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

Amelia is convinced that her husband is Gwen's murderer and that is why he wants to prove that she is still a drunk. So she goes to his hospital, but when she confronts him, he ignores her and threatens to call the police.

When Amelia leaves, she realises that the only person she can talk to is NcNaughton, who was the first to mention David. So she goes to his library, and when she asks him, he is confused because he claims he does not even know who Amelia's husband is. She misread him, and what he told her was to check on Joe Huntley, her boss. Peter McNaughton says that a few days before her death, he saw Gwen and McNaughton having an argument.

Amelia thinks that maybe Gwen found something untoward in Huntley's practice. Even though she has been fired, she drives back to the clinic, knowing that Barb and Huntley are gone, and she thinks she can persuade Lori, the receptionist, to let her in. Claiming that she has a few things to pick up, Amelia begs Lori to let her in, so in that time Amelia manages to find Mrs Bedley's file, and she also puts some other files in her handbag.

When she is outside, Stitch flees from her and runs to the back of the clinic, and then she hides because she sees Dr Huntley and his colleague having an argument. From the little she understands from such a distance the other doctor accuses Dr Huntley of malpractice. Then when she sneaks back to her car, Dr Huntley sees her.

Back at home she calls Jake, asking him to call him as soon as he can. Then he starts reading the files she stole, and she discovers that Dr Huntley used expensive treatments for people who weren't sick or those who were on remission. That is what Gwen must have found.

During the night Stitch needs to go outside, and she finds some prints on the snow. The next two chapters describe the terrible moments Amelia goes through when she has to face a murderer. He almost manages to drown her in the river, but she defends herself. Stitch reappears after being left unconscious when Dr Huntley uses a stun gun, and it is then that Amelia orders him to kill, and Stitch obeys.

Amelia returns home to find a police patrol and ambulance. Her neighbour Evan called them, and Jake is also there, who feels guilty for not coming earlier. Dr Huntley is dead, and Jake tells her that she did what she could.

In the last chapter of the book we have Amelia enjoying a day on the river with Stitch, Nora and Evan. Now Amelia works for Evan in his outfitter business, but she has not given up on her nursing career, adn she hopes that one day she will be a nurse again. We learn that the police found out how Dr Huntley did just for money. David is also involved because he suspected that there was something untoward, and Dr Huntley even borrowed his boat, which he used to get rid of Gwen. David kept quiet because Dr Huntley threatened to hurt Nora or Amelia, and that is why he did not want Amelia to work for him. David may have to go to prison, and they have agreed that Nora could stay with Amelia. And she and Jake are finally together.

I enjoyed the book tremendously. The only part I found too long was the chase between Dr Huntley and Amelia.
