Not a Sound 3 (Pages 155 - 219)

SPOILERS!!!

Despite knowing that this is not her business, Amelia can't stop investigating Gwen's death. One of the things she does is to go and see Gwen's husband, who tells her that he did not notice anything strange in Gwen's behaviour. What he remembers is that she was worried about a pregnant woman whose name was peculiar, sounding like an insect.

Gwen then gets confronted by McNaughton, who tells her to keep away from him. He claims that Gwen was a good friend and he did not hurt her. When she asks him who he thinks hurt her, he says that she should ask her husband. Amelia is surprised but thinks that he is just ridiculous.

Amelia decides to tell Jake everything, and he tells him that McNaughton has an alibi, so he did not kill Gwen. He offers her to stay at his home, and she accepts. That night he lets her read Gwen's autopsy, and she discovers that Gwen was pregnant, but other than that, there is nothing that can help in the investigation. At some point Jake falls asleep on the sofa where Gwen is supposed to use, and then Gwen also falls asleep, and at some poing she wakes up to find herself sleeping between Jake's arms, and she feels awkward.

The next day Amelia goes to see David and Nora since he has invited her to have dinner with them. David behaves kindly and even says that he misses her. At some point he leaves, and Amelia stays, so he decides to look at his computer. She discovers that Gwen went to see David as a patient, which is odd because David had told her that he didn't remember when he last saw Gwen. Amelia also finds out the name of the patient that Gwen was supposedly worried about. Her name is Jo Ellen Beadle, who was a cancer patient in remission. Jo Ellen was expecting a child, and David was her doctor, and when she gave birth, she died as well as her baby. Amelia wonders if this has anything to do with Gwen's death. She also went to the garage to throw away the cans they used for dinner, and she finds that his boat has been cleaned recently, and she finds a blonde hair, similar to Gwen's. This makes her more and more suspicious.

On Monday Amelia is working when Dr Huntley tells her that David called to ask her to pick up Nora because he had left his mobile home. Amelia goes to the school, and Nora is happy, but then a woman, Helen, keeps saying that she can't take Nora with her. The school confirms that Amelia is not on the list as the person authorized to pick up Nora, and Amelia says that she does not understand how David asked her to pick Nora up and did not bother to call the school. When she is still explaining herself, a couple of officers come to say that someone report her because she has been seen driving erratically, and she has to go through some tests to prove that she is not drunk. Amelia feels horrible because all this happened before Nora, and she is sure that she embarrassed her.

The next day when she arrives at the office, Barb, the office manager, and Tori, the receptionist, receive her stiffly. Barb says that they have found a bottle of spirits in her drawer, and the office has a strict policy against alcohol. Amelia thinks that all these dirty tricks come from David, who wants to punish her for some reason. Even though she says that the bottle is not hers and it must have been David who is trying to gaslight her, she is not believed her, and she is fired.

I don't understand what is happening. David knows that Amelia went though his files, so is this his way to threaten her? Is Amelia in danger? I also suspect Dr Huntley. I wonder the reason why Gwen was murdered. Was the baby she was expecting her husband's? Or was she in an affair?
