The Maid 2 (Pages 21 - 147)

SPOILERS!!!

I am smitten with this book and the main character. Little by little we discovere more things about Molly. She is quite naive, and I think she is neurodivergent in some way. The way she sees things is refreshing, and even though she sees every detail, the way she interprets those details goes through her personal prism.

Molly and her grandmother planned for her to study hospitality at the community college, and that is where she met Wilbur. He dated her, but then he stole the money that her grandmother and Molly had saved for years, and now Molly is bitter whenever he thinks about Wilbur and what he did to her. This is something that she hid from her gran, especially when she got sick. Her gran died with the comforting thought that she left Molly provided for with her nest egg, but the truth is that Molly struggles to pay the rent.

Now Molly is besotted with the hotel bartender, Rodney, who is not good either, but she can't see it. Once she discovered him and Juan Manuel, the dishwasher, with two rough-looking men in a room which was supposed to be empty. From the description that Molly gives us, we can surmise that those four use the hotel rooms for a drug business, but Rodney told Molly that Juan Manuel is an illegal migrant, and as he doesn't have enough money, he sleeps in the hotel with his two friends. So now Molly helps Rodney and Juan Manuel telling them which room is empty and she gives them the key card. I am sorry that Molly is taken for a fool, and she is going to be heartbroken again.

When Molly discovers the dead body of Mr Black, she is taken to the station for questioning. She describes what she saw, but she keeps quiet about some things. The reason is that she and Giselle Black have developed some kind of friendship, and even though the police tell her that Mr Black has likely died of natural causes, they can't rule anything out. So she keeps quiet about the money missing from the safe she saw open, or the missing deed she previously saw in Mr Black's breast pocket.

The next day after her questioning, Giselle is waiting for her at her apartment. The woman says she is not sorry that her husband is dead. Molly knows that Mr Black did not treat her well as she saw bruises and marks on Giselle's body. What Giselle tells her is that the morning he died they argued because Giselle wanted him to give her the villa in the Cayman Islands, but he refused. Molly saw some plane tickets to the Cayman Island in Giselle's open handbag, but she did not tell the police. Now Giselle says that she is being bullied by Victoria, Charles's daughter, as she calls him horrible names. What Giselle wants is for Molly to keep cleaning for her, and she wants her to retrieve a gun she hid in the fan of the bathroom in the suite she had with her husband.

I think that Rodney is also involved in this mystery because after she was questioned by the police, Rodney asked her to meet him after work, and he kept asking her questions. I wonder why he has so much interest in the death of Mr Black.
