SPOILERS!!!
I think that Francesca is becoming dangerous. She is deluded into thinking that the children are hers and belong to her. Not even her own family seem to matter to her. Now she has gone to stay with them and she is not in a hurry to return. Dan is not happy and has tried to tell her to stay put, but Dan has no power over her now.
The parts about 1959 shows us Alice and Julia. Alice persuades Julia to come with her to see her man in his caravan as her friend, Donnie, will be there too, and when Julia saw him, she seemed to like him. Julia approaches their caravan apprehensively. She doesn't like Roy because once he hit Alice on the face, and she thinks that he could be Alice's father.
When they are in the caravan, Julia feels uncomfortable when Alice and Roy start kissing. Donnie tells her to come outside, and when they are there, Donnie tells her that they should be ashamed of what they are doing. His mother would be aghast if his sisters behaved like Alice. Donnie also tells her that Roy is married and his wife is expecting their fifth child. From outside the caravan shakes, but Julia is too naive to know that Alice is letting Roy have his way with her.
Julia spends Christmas in Cairo with her parents, and she hates the idea of returning and finding the Irish workers there. She admits that she likes Donnie, but she hates the idea of Alice and Roy. When she told Alice about Roy being married, Alice did not seem to mind. When Julia asks her mother to let her stay longer, her mother refuses.
Back at the school Julia notices that Alice looks the worse for wear, and when her motehr dropped her off, she said that she had thrown up a couple of times. Julia is crestfallen to discover that the Irish workers are still there.
When the characters in present mention the school Renniston Hall used to be, they say that the school closed after some scandal about a girl getting pregnang. Was that girl Alice?
