Towards Zero 2 (Pages 38 - 93)

SPOILERS!!!

The two Mrs Strange find themselves sharing space at Gull's Point even though Lady Camilla does not approve. The characters in the house mention that there is some tension, some tense atmosphere that makes them afraid. During that time, there are some visits. One is Thomas Royde, who had a plantation in Malay, and he has returned to England after several years. Thomas and Audrey grew up together as Thomas's mother raised her, and Thomas admits that he has always been in love with her. Now he has been invited to stay at Gull's Point as a guest of Lady Camilla. Kay's friend, Ted Latimer, who is in love with her, follows her everywhere and is now staying at the hotel near the house. And another visit comes from Mr Treves, the lawyer.

All of these characters witness how things are not going well in the house. Nevile seems to snub his present wife and has turned his attention to Audrey. Naturally, Kay is jealous and feels ignored and neglected, which causes her to recriminate his attitude to Nevile, but he claims he is just overreacting.

There is a character that I forgot to mention in the previous post. Angus MacWhirter is a man thhat tried to commit suicide, jumping from a cliff, but a couple rescued him. He was not happy at having failed, and he told a nurse that he had no reason to live. He had no family and no job. He was involved in an accident with his boss, and the boss asked him to lie for him, saying that he was going more slowly, and he refused to lie. So he was fired, and then his wife left him. Now some time later Angus is hired by Lord Cornelly. He heard of Angus from his former boss who told the story about his refusal to lie, and Lord Cornelly needs someone as straight as Angus seems to be. We know that the job is very well paid, and I imagine it has something with the people at Gull's Point.
