Towards Zero 3 (Pages 93 - 176)

SPOILERS!!!

There is a dinner at Gull's Point one night. Apart from the staying guests, the family invite Ted Gardiner and Mr Treves. At some point Mr Treves talks about murder and he mentions an example. Years ago two children were playing with arrows and bows, and one of them shot the other by accident. However, a farmer seemed to have seen the shooter practising. Yet, nothing could be proved. Mr Treves says that he is sure he would recognise the murdering child. I think that is revealing and important in the story.

The ladies retire to rest, and Ted and Thomas drive Mr Reeves to his hotel. He says that on arriving he was disappointed when he was given a room on the third floor because he suffers from a heart condition, and he can't climb stairs. However, there is a lift in the hotel. Then when they arrive, they discover a notice that the lift is out of order, and Mr Reeves says that he will climb the stairs carefully and slowly.

The next day Thomas discovers that Mr Reeves is dead, and the doctor says that it was his heart, and having to climb all those steps has surely killed him. When Thomas mentions the lift being out of order, the owner says that nothing is wrong with the lift. So it seems that someone put the notice there on purpose.

That day it is obvious that Nevile wants Audrey back, and when Lady Camilla hears about it, she is not happy. She and Nevile have an argument, and she claims that even though she is not fond of Kay, it is not fair that Nevile intends to divorce her and then remarry Aubrey.

The next day the maid finds Lady Camilla dead in her bed. Someone has bludgeoned to death, and the police are called. Jim Leach, Superintendent Battle's nephew, is assigned the case, and since he and his uncle are together on holiday, he asks for his help.

The first examinations show that Nevile could be the culprit. It seems that Camilla was murdered with a golf club, which has blood and some hairs on its end. Nevile admits that the golf club is his. They also find several fingerprints that match Nevile's, and nobody could have used the club without smearing those prints. The police also find a blue suit belonging to Nevile whose cuffs are stained with blood. It does not help that Nevile had a row with Camilla that night. He also says that he was out, having a drink with Ted, and as he missed the ferry, Ted took him back at about two in the morning. Battle admits that everything seems to point at Nevile as the culprit, especially as he is the main heir of Camilla's estate, but he thinks everything is too obvious, and Nevile is not a fool.

Now they are questioning everybody.
