Towards Zero 4 - The End (Pages 176 - end)

RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

Battle and Leach discover that Lady Camilla was not murdered with a golf club but with a iron ball which was screwed on a Victorian fender. Then they find a glove among the ivy outside Audrey's window. The glove belongs to Audrey and it is stained with blood. And the coat found among Nevile's things has some blonde hairs on the collar. Everything seems to evidence that Audrey killed Camilla to take her revenge on Nevile.

Audrey is so afraid that she has the temptation of killing herself. Mr MacWhirter sees her and stops her, and he says that he won't let her hang. So he goes to the house and finds a rope in the box room.

Then Battle and Leach come to the house, intending to arrest Audrey. Thomas says that the motive makes no sense. The truth is that it was Audrey who left Devile for Thomas's brother, Adrian. When Adrian died in a car accident, Nevile agreed to divorce her, pretending he was the one to leave her, and then he met and married Kay. Battle says that he can't ignore the evidence against Audrey, and she is arrested.

Mr MacWhiter appears, saying that he has something to say. After he talks to Battle, the latter says that he needs to do some experiment, and everybody goes on a boat crossing the bay. Battle says that Mr MacWhirter came back to the area after he tried to kill himself a year ago, and what he realised is that there was a man climbing the house using a rope. This means that someone swam across the bay, and there is someone who was not seen for some time. That one is Ted Latimer, but he claims that he can't swim. Then Battle pushes him off the boat, and it is true that he can't, but Battle's men rescue him. Then Battle says that if the culprit is not Ted, the only other possibility is Nevile. Battle explains that this murder was planned carefully, and Nevile wanted his revenge. To do that he faked some fake evidence to prove his guilt, but he must have known that the police would discard this evidence, and then he planted evidence against Audrey. Killing Camilla was just a tool to get Audrey to hang. After his explaination, Nevile breaks down and confesses to everything, and he is taken away.

Later Battle also explains that Mr Treves must have recognised Nevile as the murdering child, and he placed the notice on the lift, and that was what killed Mr Treves, but that is not possible to prove. He also explains that Nevile swam back and forth, and then hid his coat under some seaweed, and the next day he took it to the cleaner's, but on someone's name. Just a name that he found in the hotel register, which happened to be Mr MacWhirter. Audrey says that she was in love when she married Nevile, but then she started to feel afraid. There was something off with him, so when Adrian proposed they eloped, he jumped at the chance.

At the end of the book Mr MacWhirter goes to see Audrey, and he confesses that from the rope, he guessed that Nevile had climbed the house, but he actually didn't see him as he stood there the day before. Mr MacWhirter says that he is going to South America, and Audrey tells him to take her with him. She says that they need to marry first. MacWhiter asks her about Thomas, and Audrey says that the person Thomas is in love with is MaryAldin, but he has not realised yet. So MacWhirter and Audrey get together in the end.

I enjoyed the book. I am not sure if this is one of the novels I've read previously, but I remember watching it on television with Miss Marple instead of Superintendent Battle.
