RATING: OKAY
SPOILERS!!!
Too many things happen to the family. After Jake stabs Mike, he is in a critical condition but stable. Then Ali discovers from Karen herself that there has been a relationship between her and Mike for over twenty years, exactly since university, and Jake is his. Ali feels betrayed by the two most important life in her life.
Bill stays to help, and we soon learn that during university there was attraction, but things stopped because Ali chose Mike when he asked him to lie for him. Martha, the girl who was killed in 1996, was with Mike that night, and Ali said that Mike had been with her. Now Bill and Ali become closer until they get together.
However, Bill leaves when he learns that Ali has lied to the police. In her eagerness to prove Mike innocent, she goes to the police and shows them photos of Karen with all the different boyfriends she had over the years, proving that she is promiscuous. But then when Mike needs a transplant and the only possible donor is Jake, Karen asks her to tell the police that she has evidence that Mike did it in exchange for Jake donating part of his liver. So Ali says to the police that when she went to find Mike, he said that he did not intend to hurt her, meaning Karen. When Bill learns what she had done, he goes.
Problems pile up when she discovers that they have money problems, and Cassie is suspended when she sends an indecent photograph to Aaron, who resends it to all his friends. Cassei even tries to kill herself when she swallows some pills.
At the end of the book Jodi calls Ali because she is in labour and Callum is nowhere to be found. When she arrives at the hospital, Jodi says that she tried to call her husband, but he wouldn't answer. Jodi says that the baby she is expecting comes from a donor because Callum does not produce sperm, and he does not think the baby is his. Ali volunteers to go to their house and find Callum, and on the way there she calls Karen to say that Jodi is in hospital alone, and Karen agrees to get there as soon as she can.
When Ali gets to Callum and Jodi's house, he is there, drunk, and he confesses to everything. It was him that raped Karen. He thought he was flirting with him, and Karen thought it was Mike because he was wearing Mike's jumper. Ali realises from his words that he also raped Martha twenty years ago. Ali tries to call Karen for help, but Callum stops her. She finds herself trapped against him and in real danger, but thankfully, Karen arrives and stops Callum.
At the end of the book Ali tells us that he and the children moved to London and sold the house, and Mike recovered, and they are now divorced. The book has a surprise for us when we discover that Jodi knew all along that Callum had raped Karen, and it was her who gave him an alibi.
I enjoyed parts of the book, but I found some things difficult to believe.
