The book opens with the murder of an influencer called Andrew Fairbanks. He was found with a shot in his head, tied to a yacht and his body attacked by sharks, and there was a bag with a million dollars tied to it. The book mentions Françcois Loubet linked to this death, and we later discover that this man is a money smuggler, and three deaths are suspected to be linked to him.
The characters that seems to have a central role are Amy Wheeler and Steve. Amy is a bodyguard who is now in South Carolina protecting the life of bestselling author Rosie D'Antonio, who has been threatened by a Russian oligarch when she used him for one of her novels. Amy is married to Adam, who is in finances. Amy has a very close relationship with her father-in-law, Steve, who she calls even more than her husband.
Steve is a former copper, and he now lives in a small village. His wife died some years ago, and he leads a lonely existence. He has a small detective agency and solves minor mysteries and crimes in the area. Steve is happy to live with his cat, Trouble, and live the life in the village, which includes television and the weekly pub quiz.
