SPOILERS!!!
The novel alternates storylines as Elisabeth and Sam, the babysitter, tell their feelings and stories.
Elisabeth misses her life in New York, and in this town she feels like a fish out of water. We discover that her father-in-law lost his taxi business, and now he is obsessed with American economy and the state. That is one of the reasons Andrew decided to move, to help his parents. Andrew dropped his job as a consultant because he thinks he has a groundbreaking idea to patent, which is a solar-powered grill. Elisabeth is afraid because she does not think this will lead to them being rich. Besides, some time ago Elisabeth lent her sister a large amount of money to launch her brand on Instagram. It was supposed to be just for a few months, but she is still waiting for Charlotte to give back the money. The problem is that Andrew thinks that they have Elisabeth's money to fall back on if things go wrong.
Sam is the babysitter that Elisabeth has hired. She is an art student, but she is different from her other fellow students as she does not have a lot of money. She comes from a large family. When all her other friends went abroad for a term, she had to stay back. Isabella, her roommate and best friend at university, asked her to visit in London and sent her a ticket. In London Sam met Clive, who is a tour guide and does not believe in formal education, and they started a relationship. Clive is 33 and Sam is 21, so at first the age difference bothered them. Last summer Sam went to London for the whole season and lived with him. That is when he asked her to marry, and she said that they would after she finished her studies. Clive has recently visited her, and they seem to be in love, but when Elisabeth asks about the engagement, Sam does not seem so confident that they will marry.
