Nicole has organised lunch in a restaurant to celebrate Mother's Day.
Since her mother was away to visit her sister in Spain, the event had to be postponed. After much discussion the whole family finally agree on a date. When Nicole steps into the restaurant, she is surprised to find her mother sitting alone, as she and her father are always together. Yet, Linda says that Gerry had to take care of something.
Some minutes later her father, her brother, Jamie, and his fiancé, Lucy, arrive. They order and start eating. They talk about Jamie and Lucy's wedding in October. When Nicole asks her father what he was doing before the restaurant and he gives her no answer, Linda then explains to her children and Lucy that she and Gerry are separating. The reason is that they don't make each other happy, and after trying counselling, they decided to break up. Nicole is outraged and upset, she abandons the restaurant.
A week or so later she and Jamie meet, and once again she expresses how shocked she is about her parents, and she thinks that they are making a mistake. Nicole is blunt and straightforward in her opinions. Jamie is more demure, and he says that Nicole left he told his parents that all he wanted is for them to be happy and if that is what they want. That does not sit well with Nicole, and Jamie defends himself by saying that there was nothing else he could have said.
The novel has started with a very interesting topic. I am curious to see how this family faces the new challenges.
