RATING: GOOD

11. My Lady Love, My Dove

First Published: 1952

Arthur and Pamela are married. Pamela is attractive and has a strong personality. Arthur is more easy-going and concilatory. That weekend they are to have Henry and Sally Snapes as guests, and Pamela is not happy. She was the one who invited them, but she says that they are unbearable, and the only reason she invited them was because they could play cards well. Then she comes up with a wicked idea to make the weekend more fun. She wants Arthur to set some microphone and to hear what they say in private. Arthur protests, but he eventually buys everything and sets the microphone in the guest room.

The Snapes arrive, and after dinner they play cards. As the night progresses, Arthur thinks that they are a charming couple, and it is true that they play good cards. Sally only made a mistake. At midnight Pamela says that they need to go to bed. When she and Arthur are in the room, they turn on the transmissor, and they hear Henry angry with Sally for the mistake she makes and how she made them lose money. Then he insists that they go through the combinations. Pamela is confused, and Arthur tells him that they have a secret code to cheat in the game. Pamela needs to learn the combinations and the signals. Pamela thinks that this is a great idea, and she tells Arthur that they are going to do the same and start at that very moment.

This is the last story in the collection. I love Roald Dahl's short stories. I think this collection does not have the best ones, but I enjoyed them anyway.
