10. Beware of the Dog

First Published: 1944

Peter Williamson is a pilot who is seriously injured, so he is forced to bail out of his plane. When he wakes up, he is in a hospital and he has lost a leg. The nurse who attends him tells him that he is Brighton. However, he hears some  planes he seems to recognise as German planes, but the nurse says that she has no idea about planes.

That night he manages to move from his bed and come closer to the window. From that position he can see some houses, and there is a dog kennel, and there is a notice with the warning 'Beware of the dog', but it is French. Peter realises that he is not in England but in German-occupied France, and when Wing Commander Roberts comes to see him, wanting to know about him, he remembers his superior telling him not say anything but his name and rank, and that is what he does.
