SPOILERS!!!
As we get to know this family, we realise that all of them have secrets. Tully, who tends to be neurotic and nervous, has a compulsion to steal things which she does not keep. It is something she has done since she was eleven. When Sonny, her husband, discovers some of the items hidden in their bedsite table, Tully confesses, and Sonny feels that he does not know his wife at all.
Another secret that she has hidden from her family is that she and Sonny are struggling financially, and they need to sell their house. Sonny made an investment that went wrong, and now they have no money.
Rachel has also kept a secret. She has not dated anyone since she was sixteen, and when the sisters have lunch with Heathe and Tully tells Heather, the latter guesses that Rachel may have been sexually assaulted. She has guessed right. When she was sixteen, she was jogging, and when she stopped, a man came from behind her and raped her. This is something she has never told anyone. Now Rachel is in a dilemma because she is attracted to her new delivery guy, Darcy, and the attraction is mutual but she does not feel she can date him.
Rachel has also discovered something about her mother. Before going to a nursing home, Pam kept stealing things, and when Rachel examines the things she last stole, there is a hot water-bottle, and inside the bottle she finds a lot of money - one hundred thousand dollars - and there is a note with the names Tully and Fiona Arthur. When she mentions the money to his father, he is as surprised as she is, and when she asks about Fiona Arthur, he claims he does not know who she is, but Rachel thinks her father is lying.
I wonder if Stephen is as good as he sounds because I think he also has secrets. Heather, who also has secrets of her own, gets drunk when she has lunch with Stephen's daughters, and this is something she struggles with. Her parents were both heavy drinkers, and even though she says that they are dead, we know that it is a lie. The next day after she gets drunk, she wakes up with a stiff shoulder. Stephen tells her that she fell down the stairs when she slipped. She does not remember the fall, but she seems to recollect that she did not slip, but was pushed. Apart from that, in one of the scenes about the wedding, the narrator, who until now remains unnamed, is approached by the police and requested to give her name. She is nervous because she does not want Stephen to know she was there, and she says her name is Fiona Arthur, the name that was in the name with the money. Is she Fiona Arthur? Or has she given a fake name? But who is Fiona Arthur?
