A Sunless Sea 2 (Pages 53 - 132)

SPOILERS!!!

Even though Dinah Lambourn tells Monk that her husband was murdered, everybody who Monk talks to tells him that the man committed suicide. They found him against a tree, and he had taken opium and slashed his wrists. When Monk talks to the police surgeon, he says that he had no doubt he killed himself as there was no sign of struggle, but he admits that he did not see any bottle or water around for Lambourn to take opium from.

Monk talks to Lambourn's sister, who also admits that her brother knew Zeina, and it is believed that Lambourn killed himself after the government refused his report to pass a bill. The minister, Bawdry, head of the committe, tells him that his report was full of inacuracies, and Barcay Herne, Lambourn's brother-in-law, who is also in the government, tells him the same.

Monk finds some inaccuracies in Dinah's testimony when he discovers that the woman was in Limehouse where Zenia lived the day before the murder. Some women claim to have seen her and their description matches Dinah, and they also say that her behaviour seem to show that she had taken opium as she was histerical. When Monk goes back to Dinah and asks her what she did the day Zenia was killed, she says she was with a friend, but when Monk asks the friend, it is clear that Dinah lied.

Monk has to arrest the woman, and Dinah goes with him willingly even though he insists that she did not kill Zenia. She asks Monk to ask Oliver Rathbone to be her lawyer, and Monk goes to Oliver's and explains the case. When Oliver talks to Dinah, what she implies is that the same person who killed her husband killed Zenia, and it must be to hide something, and they have Dinah now as a scapegoat.

Oliver goes to talk to Monk and Hester as he needs Monk's detective skills. Monk arrested Dinah, but he has doubts that she is the killer. Monk and Hester agree to help Oliver to find out the truth. The first thing Monk does is to find out who investigated Lambourn's death, and he discovers it was Runcorn, his former boss at the police. Monk talks to Runcorn and explains everything, and Runcorn admits that he had doubts that Lambourn killed himself, but the government wanted to have the case closed as soon as possible. Now Runcorn does not hesitate in accepting to cooperate with Monk to find out the truth.

This is getting more and more interesting.
