SPOILERS!!!
Gabriel manages to make Lord Gray speak, and the Englishman tells him that he is in love and plans to elope with his beloved. Yet, he refuses to voice her name.
Some days later Gabriel is told that Ines, Asunción and Presentación have gone to attend Parliament. When he gets there, a crowd fills the place. He runs into Presentación, who has lost Ines and Asunción. Gabriel and Presentación sit to watch the session, and Presentación is enthusiastic about what she is seeing. When Gabriel walks her home, Presentación is worried about what her mother will say, and Gabriel tells her that she needs to tell the truth, but Presentación says that it is not a good idea. When they arrive, Doña María is upset, especially when Ines and Asunción arrive and tell her that they have been with their priest.
There is a powerful attack from the French, so Gabriel has to fight with his unit. After the bombings, he is told that Lord Gray has gone missing and nobody knows where he is. He finds him dressed as a begger in a church, and it is then that the man tells him that the plan to elope with his beloved is to happen the next day. Gabriel wants to stop him because he thinks that Ines is the woman who Lord Gray has seduced. So he takes Don Diego to a tavern, and when he is drunk, he steals his keys. That night he sneaks into Doña Maria's and hides, and from his hideout he sees Ines, nervous and hesitating to leave. When Gabriel appears before her, she aks him for help because Asunción has left with Lord Gray. Gabriel has been wrong all along.
The two of them go to Lord Gray's but he is not there. Yet, the Englishman arrives shortly afterwards, and he says that Asunción is back home because the girl changed her mind and thought she was doing something wrong. Gabriel asks Lord Gray to use his carriage, and when he and Ines are inside, he instructs the driver to take them to Doña Flora's, where Amaranta lives. Ines is scared, thinking that she will be found out and lose her honour, but Gabriel tells her that she needs to go and see Amaranta.
Gabriel and Ines arrive and wake Amaranta and Doña Flora, and Ines learns that Amaranta is her mother, and mother and daughter are moved to tears. The next day Doña Maria arrives, demanding to have Ines back, but Amaranta refuses, saying that Ines is her daughter. When Maria goes, she threatens to bring the law against Amaranta. After that, Amaranta wonders if she has made a mistake, and Gabriel tells her that he will go and talk to Doña María.
The plot in this novel becomes more and more interesting. I wonder what will happen to Gabriel and Ines now.
