Cadiz 2 (Pages 23 - 122)

SPOILERS!!!

Gabriel attends the opening of the parliament at the Cortes theatre in San Fernando. There is a crowd, and Amaranta and Doña Flora have tickets. So they are witnesses of this milestone in history.

Gabriel gets into contact with Don Diego, who invites him to his mother's soirees. It is there where he sees Ines again, and he is full of jealousy when he observes Ines talking to Lord Gray. Yet, when Doña Maria de Rumblar feels that Ines has been talking with the man for too long, she suggests Gabriel take over. In the conversation Gabriel recriminates that she stopped loving her. Ines denies the accusation and claims that Gabriel has been away for too long, and he must have forgotten her. From the conversation I can guess that what Amaranta said about Ines and Lord Gray is not true. I suspect that the person who Lord Gray loves is one of Doña Maria's daughter, Asunción or Presentación, who the lady want one to be a nun and the other to be a spinster. The thing that Gabriel tells Ines is that he is shocked and disappointed because he thought that she was incapable of lying.
