Home Truths 2 (Pages 85 - 199)

 SPOILERS!!!

The book advances in time. Eleanor and Alex get married and have two children. In 2001 Alex is happy but when he runs into his old boss, he feels envious that she has managed to advance in her career, and he hasn't. The woman promises to see if there is any possibility, and Alex finds himself working for MI5. That means working away very often, and over the years Eleanor misses him and feels lonely, especially as the children start having their own lives.

Eleanor runs into Rufus, her former boyfriend, and they have coffee. Rufus says that leaving her was a mistake, and even though Eleanor knows that what she felt for Rufus was much deeper than what she feels for Alex, she walks away. She feels that things are not perfect between her and Alex. She feels she has missed out in life. Alex is also disappointed as Eleanor is not the beauty she used to be and has plumped up.

In the case of Christie and Paul. They have a good marriage, and had a second child, Jake, who Paul has problems to deal with. When Christie's mother dies, both of them are left bereft. Paul loved Christie's mum as if she were her own. When Christie goes to visit her father alone, Paul thinks that she will surprise Christie by putting up the Christmas tree. In the loft he finds a leather suitcase from Christie's past, and he finds some photographs of Christie and her ex-boyfriend from university. It seems that this upsets Paul so much that he stumbles and falls from the loft and dies. And that is how Christie finds him.

Christie is devastated and feels guilty after finding the photograph. Her main support is Daisy, but Jake came home two days after his father died because he was in Turkey. Actually, he goes to Turkey often, and Christie wonders how he can afford it. He is studying at university in Manchester, but he decides to stop studying and remains in Manchester.

Daisy persuades her mother to go on a holiday, and on the way to the station her taxi collides with another. The driver of the other car asks for her telephone, and the next day he calls, saying that his name is Piers Romaine and wants to take her out to dinner, but she says that she is on holiday. I wonder who this man is. I am afraid that this man may be the man the fortune teller told her not to trust. I have the suspicion that the man did not give her his real name.

There are paragraphs about a person who seems to be in prison for killing someone. I wonder who that is and who this person killed.
