Home Truths 3 - The End (Pages 199 - end)

RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

I have to say that the ending surprised me, in particular the reason why Alex did what she did. I did not expect that.

The man who Christie met when his car crashed the taxi she was travelling in phones her. His name is Piers, and she finally agrees to have dinner with him. They start a relationship, and Christie is besotted. As the story advanced, I had the suspicion that Piers and Alex was one and the same. Then Piers asks Christie to marry him, and she accepts. Her children Daisy and Jake think that she does not know him, but Christie is adamant. When they marry, Christie starts having doubts.

Things do not go well between them, especially as Piers does not mention her children at all, and he does not make an effort to welcome them. When Christie hires an accountant, she discovers that Piers has taken money from her accounts, so she decides to have a detective follow him. The detective gives her the address of the house Alex lives with Eleanor. When she knocks, Eleanor is in the bathroom, and Piers/Alex tells her that he can explain things, and they go back home. Eleanor has heard something, but when she leaves the bathroom, there is nobody. Eleanor has been suspecting something, and she decides to break the padlock of a suitcase that Alex keeps. Inside she finds a passport belongin to someone called Piers, and she guesses that this must be something she uses in his job. Then he also finds some documents in the name of Alexander Ingram. Eleanor checks the Internet and discovers the case of a man called Paul Ingram who had a domestic accident and died.

Eleanor decides to go to that address, and when she rings the bell, Alex answers. He tells her that he can explain things, and when they are talking, Eleanor seems to hear a screech from downstairs. Eleanor goes to the toilet and makes herself sick, and then asks Alex for a glass of water. When he goes, Eleanor sneaks upstairs and finds Christie with her hands and feet tied and gagged. Alex appears, holding a knife. Thankfully, the neighbour that has heard the commotion has called the police and turns up, stopping Alex from attacking Christie.

We discover that there is a reason for Alex's behaviour. When he went back to his home town to attend a funeral, I thought his mother had died, but the funeral he attended was Paul's as he was his older brother. Alex's mother died in childbirth, and his father always blamed him. It seems that he grew wild, and we understand that he was taken into care. He has always hated his father and Paul. When he went to the funeral and saw his widow, he felt the urge to take revenge. So he watched Christie, intending to make her suffer, and that is why he followed her and then crashed into her taxi on purpose. We also discover that this is not the first time that his behaviour has been devious. When he met Eleanor, it was him who sent him the package with the underwear and the bullet, and not Gavin. And he lied to his family all the time, saying tha the was in the antiterrorist unit when he actually was working in the police stores, and that is how he got hold of the passport he used to fake his identity.

At the end of the book Alex is in prison, and Eleanor and Christie are trying to get over all that has happened and they are becoming friends.
