In the last book we left Gabriel in Cadiz after the terrible events of Zaragoza. In Cadiz Gabriel gets into contact with Amaranta, who is now living with Doña Flora.
The book starts as Gabriel visits Amaranta, and while he is visiting, Doña Flora excuses herself to answer the door as someone they name the Englishman has arrived.
Alone Amaranta tells him that she is miserable because now Ines is under the care of María de Rumblar, and the countess and duchess, and they are adamant to make Ines forget Amaranta. The girl is never left alone, and Amaranta fears what the other women may be telling her about her.
Amaranta also tells Gabriel that he should know that Ines does not love him any longer as her heart now belongs to the Englishman, whose name is Lord Gray. Amaranta describes Lord Gray as a gentleman, a friend of Lord Byron, and he is polite, educated and has travelled widely, and she makes him see that even though Gabriel is
