Murder in the Family 2 (Pages 75 - 167)

 SPOILERS!!!

As the episodes of the programme succeed we get to discover more about the crime. The first thing we find out is that one of the experts, Mitchell, the reporter was questioned the same day of the murder by the police. Mitch says that he was a young journalist and heard about the murder on the police radio, so he came after the police and snuck into the house. The police found him next to the body and his first instinct was to run. Then the detective in charge questioned him for six hours, and Mitch says that the only reason why he was suspected was that he was black. The inspector Peter Lascelles claimed that he sold drugs to Luke, and there was a disagrement and Mitch killed him. Some marijuana was found in Mitch's car, but he claims that it was for his personal use. There was no evidence to charge him, so Mitch walked free.

During the course of this new investigation they discover that Caroline may have been having an affair. Maura says that her sister Amelia came to the house unexpectedly as she had forgotten to pick up her swimming gear, and she heard noises that came from upstairs which were typical of love making. Then she saw her mother all with her clothes in disarray and that dday Luke was away. Amelia remembers having seen a red car near the house several times, and inside he saw a gym bag with T-shirts.

Following this line, some of Caroline's friends are asked and they claim that Caroline can't have been having an affair, and Alan Canning tries to find the car, but that has not thrown any light. He has even checked gyms but in some cases records have not been kept or they refuse to disclose them.

Another possible lead was Ruppert. He claimed that he was at a dinner at Cambridge the night of the crime. One of his fellow students says that he was there, but at some point during the night he left for half an hour, which is not enough to have travelled to London and back. When he returned, he said that he had to sort out something about the house. When Rupert is asked about this, he says that he doesn't remember making that call and then he gets angry and stop the conversation. The thing is that there is no record of the call in the house's land line or caroline's mobile phone.

Then the experts try to find something about Luke's past that may have any connection with his murder. Luke was working in a bar, and the owner says that at first he was shy and weedy, but when he bulked up, he became popular. The man says that he started dating a girl, but then suddenly, he decided to leave, and the girl did not come with her. Then the investigator thought to find out if something happened in Sydney at the time of Luke's flit. What he discovered is that there had been a hit-and-run accident on the road that Luke took every day. It is likely that the man involved was Luke, but it all guess work. Besides, he hasn't been able to find anything about the person who was run over.

After Australia Luke went travelling. The American detective checked Luke in those countries he visited. He discovered that in Beirut before meeting Rupert in Greece, Luke was one of the many who were victims in a terrorist attack. Then Bill drops the bomb when he shows a picture of Luke. Everybody says that the person in the photograph is not Luke, but he says it is. Luke was killed in that terrorist attack, and the person who claimed to be Luke and married Caroline Howard was someone else. So who was the man pretending to be Luke Ryder? I imagine it was someone who was running away, but what? Or who?
