New Book - James by Percival Everett (Pages 1 - 82)

First Published:  March 19, 2024

This is the story of Huckleberry Finn and Jim, told from the perspective of Jim.

Jim is the slave of Miss Watson, and he is married and has a child, Lizzie. We discover that Jim and other slaves show a side of them to the white people which is not true. Jim can read and talk properly, but he thinks white people expect him to use bad grammar, and that is what he does. He has his reasons to teach this to the children.

One day Sadie, his wife, tells him that Miss Watson plans to sell him to someone from New Orleans. So Jim makes the decision to run away. He then swims to Jackson's Island. Shortly after arriving on the island, Huckleberry gets there. He tells Jim that his drunk father was in town, and fearing what he might do to him, he has faked his death and escaped. Jim then realises that people will believe that he (Jim) has killed Huckleberry, and that will mean a death sentence.

A couple of days later JIm persuades Huckleberry to return to town, dressed as a woman, and when Huckleberry returns, he says that they need to leave. So they take their barge and start sailing the Mississipi and reach freedom.
