James 2 - The End (Pages 82 - end)

RATING: GOOD

SPOILERS!!1

Huck and James find themselves in the company of two tricksters who call themselves the King and the Duke. One claims that he inherited the title from his father, and the other says that he is the real king of France. Huck tells them that James belongs to him, but the two men come up with a plan to sell Jim and then he will escape and they will sell him again.

Jim is bought by the director of a singing troupe, Emmet, and it is there he meets Norman, a black man passing himself off as white. The troupe paint their faces black to pretend to be black, and Jim has to pretend to be a white man who wears black makeup. When he realises that his life is in danger, he decides to leave, and Norman goes with him.

Norman and Jim want to make their families free, but they know that only a white man will be able to do that. So Norman will pose as Norman's owner.  Jim ends up as the property of a farmer who is cruel, and Jim gets beaten up. Then one of the other slaves help him, and they escape. Jim and the other slave, Sammy, meet Norman, and they discover that Sammy is a woman. When the slave owner goes after them, he shoots Sammy and she dies.

Norman and Jim end up in a steamer, and there is an explosion. Jim ends up in the water, and he sees Huck in the water as well as Norman. In that moment, he decides to save Huck and Norman dies. When they are in dry ground, Huck asks him why he saved him, and we are surprised by Jim's revelation when he says that he is Huck's father. He also reveals that the man who he believed was his father died. The body they found in the flooded cottage was his.

The Civil War has broken out, and Huck insists they return home. There Jim learns that his wife and daughter have been sold. He discovers where they are, and he goes after them. Jim then kills the overseer when he learns what he has done to SAdie,a nd he also kidnaps Judge Thatcher and leaves him tied to a tree.

I enjoyed the book, quite cruel and real at the end.
