Alison is a barrister who has won her last case of robbery and now she is given her first murder.
When her colleagues, Robert and Sankar asks her to join them for a drink, she says that she will have only one as she wants to go home early. In the bar there is also Patrick, another lawyer, and his students. Despite her intention to go home, Alison drinks more than she should. Then Patrick, who from the first seems to be quite nasty, takes her to her chambers and has a passionate moment with her. Alison tells him that this is the end and they can't carry on.
Alison is woken up by Matilda, who is her little girl. She has fallen asleep on the chair in her chambers, and Matilda and her husband, Carl, have come for her. Carl is not happy to find her this way, but he tries to smooth things for Matilda's sake.
We don't know much about the characters, but Alison doesn't seem to be very nice as she is ready to risk her family for someone who doesn't treat her very well.
