Having a Lovely Time 3 - The End (Pages 206 - end)

RATING: GOOD AND VERY FUNNY

SPOILERS!!!

The turning point in the novel is when baby Freya disappears. Nina agreed to let her go with Helena, another guest, and her twin children. When the twins fall asleep and Freya grows bored, Helena asks her older daughter, Sophia, to take Freya to her sister, Tabitha. Sophia arrives at the games room when Tabitha and the others are playing hide-and-seek. Sophia joins the game and leaves Freya with Sam. When the game finishes, Freya is nowhere to be found. Everybody is desperate and starts looking everywhere. Nina feels this is her penane for the bad things she has done. From her memories we discover that Nina and Joe started their affair, but she hated when he cancelled when he had a family commitment. Three years ago on her birthday Joe let her down, so she decided to go out anyway and get drunk. That is how she slept with a man who took her to his own home. Nina thinks that Freya may not be Joe's, but this man's because Freya does not look like either her or Joe. This man is Guy, and Nina thinks that Freya's copper streaks in her hair may come from her real father.

Alice discovers that Sam has Freya's hairslide in his fist, and she gets him to tell her the truth. Sam was upset because the others wouldn't play with him, so she took Freya to a secret place. Rosa, the cleaner, showed him a hidden lift that took them to the Prince's secret room. So that is where Sam took Freya. Alice finds her and takes her to her parents, and everybody is so relieved.

During the search for Freya, Guy finds an English newspaper and discovers that Peanut is engaged to a celebrity, which means that she has deceived him. Guy is not a very nice person and I hate the way he thinks of and drinks Alice. The time when he picked up Nina and slept with her, he took her to his home because Nina was in hospital as he had forced her to have an abortion and the boys were sleeping somewhere else. Guy does not seem to remember that night or Nina.

When Freya is found, Nina and Joe are relieved. Then Joe says that Freya looks like Susannah, his sister, and Nina replies that he has no sister. Joe then explains that he did have a sister, red-haired, who died very young, and Freya looks like her. Nina discovers then that Joe is actually Freya's father.

That night when Guy is sleeping, Alice comes to him and makes him have sex with her. She is sure that she is going to get pregnant. Then Guy walks out of the flat; he is drunk and decides to go into the sea, and he drowns. His body is found the next day, which is a terrible ending for him.

And during this holiday Hils starts a relationship with Stan, an architect, who she met at her novel's presentation. She thought that he was a waiter, but when she visited Sandy and Nick, she sees him again, and that is how their story starts.

I think that it was a funny novel even though most of the characters were very unlikeable.
