New Book - Having a Lovely Time by Jenny Eclair (Pages 1 - 122)

 First Published:  January 1, 2000

This is the story of two families and their conflicts.

Guy Jamieson remembers when he and his wife Alice first bought their house. They only had Max, and now ten years afterwards they also have Sam, who is nine. Guy despises Alice as she has put on a lot of weight, and he is not attracted to her. Now he has started an affair with a younger woman called Peanut, and he believes to be in love with her, so he plans to leave Alice.

Alice is totally involved in her children's life. However, she neglects Max in favour of Sam, who she spoils and overprotects. At school, Sam seems to have problems because it seems that he has no friends as Sam does not make an effort to be friendly, so nobody likes him.

Joe Dobson is a photographer, and he is divorced from his first wife after he had an affair and left his girlfriend pregnant. So now Joe lives with his girlfriend, Nina, and their daughter Freya. Joe has two other children, Tabitha and Saul by his wife, Hils.

Hils has now written a book 'Diary of a Divorcee' in which she recounts her experience through divorce. The book has now been published. Hils still struggles with her situation as a divorcee, and she has realised that her children, who are 13 and 9, try not to rock the boat , so they don't mention the good things they get up to when they are with their father and Nina.

The point where the two families are like to meet is during the summer holiday. Guy has decided to take hiis family to Italy in an attempt to avoid a conjoint holiday with Alice's friend, Di, and her family. Joe is also taking Nina and the three children to Italy. Both family are to stay in the same resort.
