The Lost Lights of St Kilda 2 (Pages 55 - 87)

SPOILERS!!!

Chrissie tells her daughter about the next time that Archie came to the island. He wasn't alone. There was a friend, Fred, and both intended to spend the summer there. There were also two young women, who were not staying. What hurt Chrissie is that Archie seemed not to remember her even though the last time they saw each other - when they were both sixteen - he said that he would marry her.

In 1940 Rachel Anne is convinced that her father is Archie even though Chrissie has not told her directly. Then she discovers an article saying that Archie MacLeod is missing in action. Chrissie tells her that they need to pray for all their boys.

Fred has been moved to a prison camp in northern France, and he and another young man Angus manage to escape. Their plan is to cross to Spain. When they are having lunch at an inn, two German officers turn up. The waitress, who recognise them as British, tells them to get to the back. And then the waitress appears with two police officers. Fred thinks that they have been arrested, but he and Angus are taken to a farm where the family help them, and they promise they will try to get them to Spain. However, they learn that the Germans are searching the farms in the area, so Fred and Angus have to leave, using two bicycles that they family let them have.
