This is a story that I found difficult to follow and quite boring. Jack Layford invites her friend, Phil, to his home for Christmas. They talk about the girls who we understand are Jack's sisters. When they arrive, Phil is besotted by Margaret Layford. Jack seems upset and jealous as the relationship between Phil and Margaret becomes closer. There is also a nanny, Miss Donner, who is not very agreeable.
Jack then tells Phil about having been visited by a ghost, who has told him that a relationship with a cousin is sinful. Then Jack reveals that Margaret is not his sister but his cousin. The book ends with the revelation that the ghost is Miss Donner in disguise because he wanted Jack for herself. And Phil and Margaret become engaged.
