SPOILERS!!!
The girls get to the farm, and that night Rose and Alice try to keep the order. There are eight girls. Apart from the ones I mentioned before, there is Hester Tucker, whose father is a vicar, so she is very religious in her views. Mabel Hodges is a big girl who doesn't like to bather. Chrissie explains to the rest that she has been married for two months and hasn't seen her husband since then as he is in the army. Their plan is to save money so that they can get a place of their own. And Cowena comes from Wales.
The first day working the farm proves hard for all of them. Chrissie tells Alice that Ron, her husband, has a twenty-four leave, so she wants to go to Plymouth after work to see him. Alice says that she thinks it won't be a problem but she needs to check with Mr Baylis. The man refuses permission. That night Chrissie goes to Plymouth anyway to see Ron. When they are in the guesthouse, Ron goes out to buy some dinner, and then a German plane crashes into the guesthouse, killing Chrissie.
Ron goes to the farm the following day leaving Alice and Rose horrified. Mrr Bayliss tells Alice off because the girl sneaked away without even her being any the wiser. Alice and her room mate, Mabel, feel guilty because it was Mabel who covered for her. Alice tells Mabel that Chrissie wanted to see Ron, and she would have felt horrible if she hadn't been able to see him, and who knows what may happen to her. Rose, who appeared stiff and unsympathetic at first, tells Alice that she is not to blame, and when Alice talks about quitting, Rose tells her that she won't allow it, and she shouldn't sell herself short, and Rose admits that she was stiff towards her at first because she wanted the post that Alice got.
Georgina seems to have an admirer in Mr Bayliss's son, Christopher, but she treats her coldly.
And now a new girl has come to replace Chrissi, Iris Butler
