1. The Tapestried Chamber by Sir Walter Scott

First Published: 1828

General Richard Browne arrives at a village where there is a castle, who he learns belongs to Lord Frank Woodville. Richard and Lord Woodville went to Eton together, and when Frank Woodville sees Richard, he is happy to let him stay. There are other guests, and Lord Woodville says that he can stay a week. He takes him to a room which is full of tapestries. The next day at breakfast Richard does not appear, and it turns out that he got up very early and went for a walk. When Frank asks him about his night, he says that he slept well but he is afraid he needs to leave.

When Frank and Richard are alone, the former tells him that he needs to be honest with him, and Richard tells him that he had a terrible night. When he was in bed, he saw a shadow and at first, he thought it may be some other guest who mistakenly got into the wrong room, and he even coughed. Then he saw that it was a woman, dressed in old clothes, and when she turned her face, Richard saw that she had the most terrifying face that he has ever seen.

Before Richard leaves, Frank tells him that he wants to show him some family portraits, and Richard recognises the ghost. He says that the woman was an old relative who was accused of murder and incest. Frank says that the room where Richard slept had been locked for years, and there were rumours that it was haunted, but he didn't believe it. So that is why he carried out the experiment with Richard, who was a courageous army officer, and he thought that there was no danger. Now that Richard has proved that the room is indeed haunted, Frank swears that it will be locked forever.
