Henry Rathbone gets the visit of his friend James Wentworth.
The latter tells him that his son Lucien has disappeared, and he is not sure what to do. James explains that like all young people Lucien loved to enjoy carnal pleasures, but that behaviour grew worse and worse, especially as a woman has becomes his only raison d'etre. Rathbone promises that he will try to find Lucien.
Henry goes to the clinic where Hester works, because he knows she has experience in finding people and might know where to start. When he gets to the clinic, Squeaky Robinson is there, and when Henry tells him what he wants with Hester, Squeaky thinks that it won't be right. So he volunteers to help Henry.
What Squeaky does is to go to find Crow, a man who treats people in the area even though he was not able to finish his studies in medicine. Crow agrees to help him, and they try to find out more about Lucien. They learn that the woman Lucien is mad about is called Sadie, and there is a second lover, Niccolo. Sadie is a prostitute and also dealt with forbidden substances, and Shadwell is the man who believes himself to be her owner.
Squeaky tells Henry everything, and the older man agrees to help Squeaky and Crow to find Lucien. They are joined by a young woman Bessie, who knows Lucien. When they are trying to find Lucien, they are shown into a room where there has been a murder and blood just remains. The group wonder if Lucien is the one that has been murdered. However, they find Lucien, shattered and emaciated, and Lucien remembers little. The person who was murdered was either Sadie or Niccolo, and they need to gather evidence to discover the truth.
