New Book - Juan Martín el Empecinado - Episodios Nacionales 9 - by Benito Pérez Galdós (Pages 1 - 33)

First Published: January 1, 1874

After Cadiz, Gabriel leaves Inés and Amaranta in Madrid.

He joins the guerillas in Alicante, and then they move to Aragon. He and his friend are part of the troops of Vicente Sardina, first in command after the Empecinado, and there is a priest, Mosen Anton Trijueque, who insists they fight. Vicente Sardina is not so vehement and prefers to wait, and the priest leads them to battle.

One of the characters we have seen before reappears. It is Gorito Santurrias and he used to be Don Celestino's sexton.  He is a widower and in the book where he appeared he had several children, and he reports Don Celestino for his support to Godoy. On this occasion he carries a two-year-old child, who keeps crying because he wants to be breastfed. I think this addition adds some humour to the story.
