Two years pass, and we understand more what the problem with Prue is. She was born with a cleft lip (harelip), and her mother thinks that it was because a hare stood in her way. In these two years both siblings have worked hard, and Prue has learnt to read and write from Mr Beguildy, who calls himself a wizard.
Prue and Gideon go to Lullingford on market day to buy two oxen. When they go to the tavern, Prue is aware of the looks that other people throw at her. Then an elegant lady enters, and she hears how she hints that she is a witch because of her lip. Gideon is not happy and tells her that Prue is her sister, but Prue reflects that he does not understand that she has been called a witch because of the way she looks. Before coming back home, Gideon takes her to see the big house where he dreams they will own one day. The house is owned by the lord whose niece is the person who insulted Prue.
