Juan Martín el Empecinado 4 - The End (Pages 111 - end)

RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

In his prison Gabriel receives the visit of Trijueque, who admits his treason but he also hates the French. Gabriel says that he could go and ask El Empecinado for forgiveness, but Trijueque refuses, saying that he won't do it. Trijueque admires Gabriel for his loyalty to the nation, and then when Gabriel asks about Santorcaz, he tells him something that shocks him. Santorcaz has intercepted the letter that Gabriel gave Pelayo for Inés, and now he has written a letter to her, imitating Gabriel's hand and Pelayo will give it to her. Afraid that Ines will fall into the trap, Gabriel shouts that he will fight with the French, but Trijueque stops him.

That night Gabriel finds a file among El Empecinadillo's things, and he manages to remove the grill in the window. His intention is to leave the child behind, but he cries, so he has no option but take him with him. Yet, his jailer, the French whose son died and wanted to take in El Empecinadillo, intercepts him, but Gabriel threatens him  and the man lets him leave and Gabriel leaves the boy with him.

Gabriel is late when he goes to Cifuentes. Ines is gone and nobody knows where. He is in the camp with El Empecinado when Trijueque turns up. El Empecinado says taht he forgives him and won't have him executed but he is not welcome and he will have to return to his parish. Then Gabriel sees Pelayo and goes straight to him, demanding to know where Santorcaz has taken Ines. He says that he doesn't know, but he says that Trijueque knows. When Gabriel goes after the priest, he is gone.

I imagine that Gabriel will try to find Ines in the next book. I wonder what will happen next.
