La Bodega 2 (Pages 45 - 126)

 SPOILERS!!!

The book dissects the different characters that are part of the universe of the novel. Sr Fermín is Ferminillo's father, who is the foreman at the vineyard. In his youth he used to be a revolutionary and spent time in prison, and then he and a friend of his, Paco of Algar, became smugglers and that life ended. Fermin was hired by old Don Pablo, who found him entertaining and funny as he told his many adventures. When the old man died, Fermin felt his loss heartily.

The novel tells us about the Marquis of San Dionisio, Doña Elvira's brother. He came from a lineage of noblemen, and his ancerstors took part in the battle which won an ancient flag. The Marquis had a peculiar social life and liked to be surrounded by gypsies and low-class people, which caused scandal. When he died, his daughters went to live with Elvira. These girls, Lola and Mercedes, had grown in a household that was very different to the strictures of Doña Elvira. The two of them enjoyed the attention of men as they sat at the window. Lola got married to a man who was not her class, but she didn't care. Mercedes eloped with a man in Paris, and there she became a socialite and a coquette who enjoyed the attentions of a large list of lovers. Lola and her husband didn't have a peaceful marriage as Lola still liked flirting with other men. He eventually left and moved to his mother's house, and Lola enjoyed the company of gyspies, flamenco singers and other low-class men. She eventually started a relatioship with a pig breeder, who didn't treat her well, but she didn't seem to ming.

Another character that is important in the novel is Rafal, Paco of Algar's son. He is a good rider, and in the first years of his youth he followed his father's steps and became a smuggler. When he was seriously injured by the law, he came to ask Sr Fermin for help. María Luz, Sr Fermin's daughter, took care of him and he recovered. Rafael wanted to change his life and be the man María Luz deserved, so he was hired in the farm that Don Luis, Don't Pablo's cousin, had.
