Fermín Montenegro works in one of the wineries in Jerez de la Frontera.
The winery is Casa Dupont, and his boss is Don Pablo Dupont. When the novel opens, he is worried because he is one hour late that Monday. The reason is that the day before he went to see Fernando Salvatierra, an anticlerical revolutionary who has just been released from prison. Fermín describes how Salvatierra has a golden heart and worries about people, but refuses the church. Now Don Pablo Dupont is not a bad boss, but he is very pious and devoted to church, and the problem is that he demands his employees go to church. There is an example of a former employee who was fired for missing church, and he complains that his boss shouldn't have any right to say what he does in his free time.
