Legado en los huesos - Characters

These are the characters in the first book of the trilogy for further reference.


REGULAR CHARACTERS

  • Inspector Amaia Salazar (35) is the main character in the trilogy. Amaia is clever, determined and honest. She learnt techniques from the FBI when she did some work experience there. Amaia is married to James, who is an American sculptor, and now they havea  baby son. Amaia has a traumatic background story. While growing up, she was aware that her mother hated her, and Rosario even tried to kill her at the age of nine when she hit her with a metal rolling pin, put her in the kneading trough and buried her in flour. After that, the doctor told her father that she should remove the girl from the family home, and Amaia went to live with her Aunt Engrasi. Amaia has two sisters: Flora and Rosaura. Flora is hostile to her because she feels it is her fault that their mother is institutionalized. In this book Amaia learns that she had a twin sister, but she died at birth. We know that Rosario killed her, and Juan, her father, prevented her from killing Amaia. 
  • James is Amaia's husband. He is a good sculptor, and he agrees to look after Ibai while Amaia works.
  • Ibai is Amaia's baby son. 
  • Flora Salazar is Amaia's eldest sister. She is a bitter woman who hates the fact that she had to shoulder the family business. Flora doesn't believe Amaia about what their mother did to her, and she thinks that Amaia could have done something to prevent their mother from being institutionalized. Flora was married to Victor, who was the killer in the first book. When Flora realised he wass the killer, she confronted  and killed him. Now Flora lives Zarautz, where she works in television. 
  • Rosaura Salazar (36) is Amaia's other sister. Now Rosaura is in charge of the bakery after Flora left. Ros was married to Freddy, but he left him after she discovered he had cheated on her. 
  • Aunt Engrasi Salazar is Amaia's aunt. When her mother tried to kill Amaia, sje went to live with Engrasi. Engrasi is a widow. When she was young, she went to Paris and studied psychology and fell in love. They got married, and Engrasi didn't even invite her relatives because she wanted to leave Elizondo and her past behind. Then her husbanddied of a heart attack, and she returned to Elizondo, intending not to leave again. Engrasi also reads the tarot. Engrassi tells James and Amaia that they can have the family home that her mother left her. 
  • Rosario Iturzaeta is Amaia's mother. She is mentally sick and her sickness made her turn against her youngest daughter. Rosario tried to kill Amaia when she cornered her in the workshop and hit her with a metal rolling pin and buried her in flour. Rosario also developed Alzheimer's, and while in hospital assaulted a nurse, biting her in the neck. Rosario has been locked in a mental hospital, but she attacked an orderly, almost killing him. They discovered that Rosario hadn't taken pills for months and a man had been visiting her. Amaia and her sisters decide to move her to the hospital run by Dr Sarasola. Here she escapes with the help of Dr Berasategui, who is the man who induced his clients to commit suicide. Rosario escapes when Amaia confronts her, and when some of her clothes are found near a river, the police think she has fallen into the river and died, but Amaia believes that her mother is still alive.
  • Judge Javier Markina is the new judge in the area. He has no problem in telling Amaia that he is in love with her. He is quite insistent even though Amaia tells him that she is married and is not interested. Yet, Amaia finds him very attractive. 
  • Deputy Inspector Jonan Etxaide works closely with Amaia. He is a good policeman and he studied anthropology and archeology before joining the police. 
  • Inspector Fermín Montes is another detective Amaia had problems with in the first book. He became bitter with Amaia when she was named the leading investigating officer. Montes had been going through a bad patch when his wife left him for another man. Fermin was upset when Flora used him to get information out of him, and he was suspended when he lost it. In this book he and Amaia had a confrontation, but in the end they seem to reach an understanding. Montes is reinstated when Amaia testifies in his favour, and he joins the team again. 
  • Inspector Uriarte is from the police in Elizondo and is a great help for Amaia in the case. Uriarte is married and has children. 
  • Deputy Inspector Zabalza is from the police in Elizondo. He and Amaia have a tense relationship because he is friends with Montes, and he begrudges her what happened to his friend. Zabalza has a girlfriend, but he hides the fact that he is gay. 
  • Lieutenant Pauda is a civil guard who Amaia often works with. 
  • Freddy Dearrain was Rosaura's husband. He had an affair with Anne, one of the victims, and unable to stand the idea of her death, he tried to commit suicide. Now Freddy lives with his mother and is in a wheelchair.
  • Aloisius Duprée is a FBI agent in Quantico, who Amaia consults when she reaches stalemate in the investigation. It seems that Aloisius has gone missing. There is a story with this man because Engrassi doesn't like Amaia talking to him. 
  • Dr Jorge San Martin is the local pathologist. 
  • Marisa is Zabalza's girlfriend
    Jean Martin is Engrasi's late husband. He was Belgian.
  • Santy used to be Zabalza's lover. He still sends him photos of himself naked even though Zabalza left him. 
  • Victor was Flora's husband and the murderer. Flora left him because he drank too much. The reason he drank was that it was the only way to control his base instincts, and when he stopped drinking to get Flora back, he started killing again. Flora killed him when she confronte him.
  • Clarice is Amaia's mother-in-law, who visits for the birth of Ibai
  • Thomas is Amaia's father-in-law. 
  • Juanita Salazar was Amaia's grandmother.
  • Juan Salazar was Amaia's father. Amaia doesn't understand why her father didn't defend her. 
  • Inmaculada Herranz is Judge Markina's assistant.
  • Ernesto works in the bakery.

CHARACTERS IN THIS NOVEL

  • Johana Márquez was a girl who was found dead in a hut by some children. At first, it was believed that she was another victim of the same murderer, but it was her stepfather who killed her when she tried to stop his advances. In this book her stepfather commits suicide, leaving the word tarttalo in a note, and that is what starts the investigation. 
  • Jasón Medina wasJohana's killer. When he commits suicide and leaves the word 'tarttalo', Amaia starts to realise that there is a second man that may have induced men to kill women and then persuade them to kill themselves.
  • Anne Arbizu (15) was a victim in the first book. Anne led a double life. She was the perfect daughter for her parents, but behind their backs she drank, did drugs and had an affair with a married man like Freddy. It seems that she and Flora also had a relationship. 
  • Lucia Aguierra is a woman who disappeared. Her husband is suspected to have killed her. When the man confesses where Lucia is, he commits suicide and leaves the word 'tarttalo' on the wall of the prison. 
  • Ramón Quiralle was Lucia's husband and killer. He committed suicide after he told Amaia where Lucia's body was buried. 
  • Elena Ochoa used to be Rosario's best friend. When Amaia talks to her, she says that she and her mother started going to pilates classes. They enjoyed the classes, and the group started to talk about paranormal things. However, things turned nasty when the instructor started talking about sacrifices of animals, and then human sacrifices. Elena left the group, and Rosario kept loyal to the group and didn't talk to Elena any longer.
  • Monsignor Landeo is the archbishop in Baztan.
  • Father Lokin is the priest of the church that was profanated.
  • Father Sarasola is a priest from the Vatican and is also a psychiatrist that runs an important clinic. He is interested in Rosario as a patient, and when Rosario attacks the orderly, Rosario is moved to his clinic. Sarasola discovers that one of his doctors is a criminal.
  • Beñat Zaldua is a teenager who writes a blog about the agotes. His mother died and his father mistreats him. He confesses that a man with no fingers contacted him, but he got scared when the man started using bones. At the end of the book Beñat goes to live with a cousin. 
  • Esteban Yañez is the neighbour who lives next to Juanitaenea, the house that belonged to Amaia's grandmother. Esteban kept sending angry looks at Amaia and James from behind the fence. Esteban turns out to be the father of the murderer, and he is the one who took the bones that were buried in Juanitaenea's garden. 
  • Manolo Aspiroz is the architect that James hires to have a look at Juaniaenea.
  • Zuriñe Zabaleta is the sister of a woman who was murdered by her husband, who later committed suicide, leaving the word tarttalo.
  • Edurne Zabaleta is a woman whose husband killed her and committed suicide.
  • Maria Abasolo is another woman who was killed by her husband, and he committed suicide as well. 
  • Inspector Ayegui is the detective who is caled when rosario attacks the orderly.
  • Dr Tatchenko and Dr Gonzalez are a married couple who run a laboratory. 
  • Dr Aldo Franz is the director of the mental hospital where Rosario attacked the orderly. He was killed by the killer. 
  • Agent Johnson is an FBI agent who helps Amaia with the images that she gets from the mental hospital. 
  • Fina Hidalgo is the sister of the doctor who helped Rosario when Amaia was born. Fina confesses to Amaia that he helped some women kill their own children because there are women who can't take care of one more child. 
  • Nuria Otaño is a woman whose husband kept prisoner in their home until she escaped. She was a terrified woman, and when her husband threatened to go and see her after he was released from prison, she trained to shoot a gun, and when he turned up, she shot him and hit him in the ear.
  • Antonio Garrido is Nuria's husband. He is the man who profanated the church and involved Beñat, the teeanger, in his activities. Montes discovers him hidden in an old building and prevents him from committing suicide. 
  • Dr Berasategui is Esteban Yañez's son. When his mother died, he was sent away to study. the man is a psychopath, and Amaia believes he killed his own mother. And he became obsessed with men who killed their women and he became their therapists. Berasategui talked them into killing themselves. It is Berasategui who helps Rosario to escape the hospital. Amaia finds them, and she arrests him.
