RATING: OKAY
SPOILERS!!!
I have to say that I found the ending of the book too confusing with too many killers and deaths.
Bartholomew discovers who is the high priest in the Guild of Coming through Richard Tuylet. The man comes to him and says that it is true that he joined the guild when three of his children died in the plague, and he gave his back to the church. Things were normal, and then a new high priest came, and things went from bad to worse. It is then that the murders started. Richard says that he is certain that the high priest is behind the deaths, and it is Sir Reginald de Belem. He says that the reason why his son has stopped his investigation is because de Belem is blackmailing him. His son has been kidnapped, and de Belem has the child. Bartholomew has problems believing that de Belem killed his own daughter, but he agrees to investigate.
Bartholomew, his brother-in-law Stanmore and Michael go to de Belem's, and it is there when they discover that Tuylet is right. In a room they discover a large quantity of cloth, which means that de Belem was behind the robberies that Stanmore suffered. Bartholomew also discovers that Joanna de Lincoln is there and she seems to be a partner of de Belem. They rescue the child, but de Belem and Joanna escape. The men go after them, and they find out that the man has lands in a town, monopolising a rich crop like saffron. It is here that de Belem and Joanna are arrested.
Back in town, Bartholomew explains that de Belem's motive for the killings was his greed. He got rid of the high priest so that he could scare people in submission. As Bartholomew explains the case, he uncovers something else. Joanna is actually a man, Gilbert, who is another killer. He was the one who killed Nicholas of York and Joanna, who was Gilbert's sister because they were in love. The death of Joanna was an accident, and Nicholas escaped, but Gilbert found him and killed him.
Then we have a third killer. Sybilla is found dead, so the men who are arrested can't be the killers, and Bartholomew discovers that the killer is Alric Jonstan. The man seems to have lost his mind after his mother died. His mother was a very strict woman who vituperated prostitutes. Jonstan is the one who killed all these women.
I enjoyed the mystery, but to be honest, I didn't like the ending too much.
