An Unholy Alliance 3 (Pages 142 - 309)

 SPOILERS!!!

There are too many questions about the murders, but Bartholomew seems to be no closer to learn the truth.

When by order of the Chancellor the body of Nicholas York is unburied, they discover that in the coffin there  is a woman wearing the mask of a goat instead of Nicholas York. The mask seems to indicate that this death is connected to satanism. Bartholomew's son-in-law has told him that there are two guilds that have turned into a coven and they meet in two disused churches.

Bartholomew is approached by Sybilla, a prostitute, who is very scared because she claims to have seen the man who killed Isobel, and she is afraid that she will be next. Sybilla says that she didn't see his face because he was wearing a hood. Bartholomew takes the woman to Oswald, his brother-in-law, who agrees to let her stay.

Michael, Bartholomew and some others decide to hide in a church where they know one of the covens meet. Michael stays outside, but Bartholomew hides on a platform near the ceiling, and as he watches, he discovers two men standing close to him who release some birds and spray blood to make those in the coven to believe that the high priest has powers. The high priest does some kind of ritual dance, and he speaks about someone to die soon. That means that this could be the reason why women are dying. Bartholome also see Richard Tulyet, the mayor's father, and his wife. Michael and Bartholomew decide to go and ask them the next day, but they are turned down with threats.

One night Bartholomew sees a man standing in the churchyard, and he recognises Richard of York, who is alive, but when he approaches, the man flees.

The Chancellor is going to conduct the funeral for the unknown woman found in Nicholas's coffin and Marius Froissart, whose body Bartholomew found in the belfry. The coffins are sealed when Michael and Bartholomew arrive at the church, but something in one of the coffins makes Bartholomew insist on checking on the bodies. The Chancellor thinks that this is not a reasonable request, and Gilbert is the one who opposes most. The chancellor agrees to let Bartholomew open the coffin, but he and Gilbert agree to wait outside. When Bartholomew opens the coffin, he discovers that the body of the woman is gone, and he discovers Nicholas of York's body. He has been garotted.

When Bartholomew and Michael go to tell the others, Gilbert starts running, and Bartholomew follows him, and he ends up in the area where Janetta is, and he is collared by her, but Gilbert is nowhere to be seen. Now that Janetta is there, he uses the opportunity to ask her about Froissart, and the woman says that it is not true that she was witness to the man killing his wife, but she knows that he was not a good man to his family.

It seems that Gilbert is involved and has something to do with Nicholas's death. But once again why are all these people dying? Is it true that the coven is killing these people?
