An Unholy Alliance - Characters


 These are the characters in this novel for future reference:

Regular characters:

  • Matthew Bartholomew is the main character in the series. He is a doctor of medicine and teaches in Michaelhouse. Matthew has unconventional ideas about medicine, and unlike many of his colleagues he does not believe that using leeches and bleeding people are good methods for treating a disease. He is also very observant and sensible. Matthew is in love with Philippa Davigny.
  • Brother Michael is a Benedict monk at Michaelhouse. He and Matthew are friends. Brother Michael is overweight and loves his food. 
  • Cynric ap Hwydd is Matthew's book bearer, a kind of assistant. He and Matthew are good friends.
  • Philippa Abigny is the woman who Matthew loves. In this book she is away. 
  • Giles Abigny is a master of philosophy. He loves women and seems to have a love interest every week. Giles finds himself involved in a plot when the abbess where his sister stays plans to kill her so that she can inherit her money. That is why Giles takes her away and pretends to be her in the locked room in Edith's house. When Matthew bursts into the room, he realises that the person whose face is veiled is not Philippa, so Giles flees. He eventually returns to reveal everything to Matthew.
  • Edith Stanmore is Matthew's sister. 
  • Sir Oswald Stanmore is Matthew's brother-in-law. He is a cloth merchant and helps Matthew in this book.
  • Richard Stanmore is Matthew's nephew. He is studying at Oxford.
  • Samuel Gray is Matthew's medical student. In the last book, after the death of his master he went to Matthew because he wanted him to be his new master. Samuel is ambitious and doesn't like the fact that most of Matthew's patients are poor. He aspires to have a life of richness, so his plan is to be a physician for the rich.
  • Robert Deynman is Bartholomew's least able student. His father is very rich.
  • Thomas Bullbeck is Bartholomew's brightest student.
  • Father William is a Franciscan friar at Michaelhouse. He teaches theology.
  • Agatha is the laundress at Michaelhouse.
  • Roger Alcote is a scholar at Michaelhouse.
  • Rachel Atkin is a woman whose son died in the last book. Matthew helped her and found her a job. Now Rachel is being courted by Cinryc

Characters in this novel:

  • Isobel Watkins is a prostitute who is killed at the beginning of the book.
  • Richard Harling is a seniour proctor at Physwick Hostel.
  • Thomas Kenyngham is a Gilbertine friar and the master at Michaelhouse.
  • Gilbert is the chancellor's personal clerk, and he turns out to be the killer of Nicholas and his own sister. Gilbert was in chaoots with de Belen, and after his sister's death, to hide the fact that she was dead, she dressed up as her. 
  • Father Cuthbert is another scholar in the book.
  • Richard de Wetherset is the chancellor.
  • Nicholes of York is a clerk who wrote a history of the university. At the beginning of the book he is believed to have died a month before, but the chancellor fears that he has been murdered. That is why he has a permission to dig his grave. What they find is a woman in the coffin where Nicholas was supposed to be. Then Nicholas is found dead in the coffin when the woman was going to be buried.
  • Alric Johnstan is a Junior proctor who turns out to be the killer of prostitutes. 
  • Evrard Buckley is the chancellor's deputy who is kidnapped by de Belen. 
  • Ibn Ibrahim is the physician Bartholomew learnt from at the universith in Paris. He does not appear in the book, but Bartholomew refers to him often. 
  • Sybilla is a prostitute who is afraid for her life because she saw the man who killed Isobel. Oswald helps her by letting her stay in his house. When it seems that the killer is behind bars, she leaves the house, and that is why she is murdered. 
  • Frances de Belem (24) is a young woman who Oswald wanted Bartholomew to marry because she is the daughter of a rich merchant. Bartholomew found her too young, so that is why he went away and studied in Paris. Frances goes to find him because she is pregnant and wants to get rid of the baby, but Bartholomew tells him that he can't help her. Then days later she is found dead in the yard of Michaelhouse. 
  • Sir Reginald de Belem is a cloth dyer. He turns out to be a murderer and kidnapper. He used the guild of coming to scare people and manipulate the members as he came as the high priest. He is found out at the end of the book.
  • Mistress Woodman is the local midwife. 
  • Piers Hesselwell is a Franciscan  and fellow of law. 
  • Brother Boniface is a Franciscan who studies medicine with Bartholomew, but he disapproves of his methods. At the end of the book he realises that he doesn't want to study medicine just because his father is a physician. He is considering leaving the order as well. 
  • Father Aiden is another Franciscan.
  • Brother Alban is a Cistercian living in Michaelhouse. He is the one who tells Bartholomew about the cult to the devil. 
  • Sheriff Richard Tulyet is the law in Cambridge, but he doesn't seem to be doing much about the deaths of the prostitutes. Bartholomew discovers that the reason why he is inefficient is because his son has been kidnapped and de Belem is using the baby to blackmail him. 
  • Janetta of Lincoln is a woman who Bartholomew meets when he is almost attacked by thugs. Bartholomew doesn't trust her, and at the end of the book she is helping de Belem. However, Bartholomew discovers that the real Janetta is dead; she is the woman found in the coffin, and Gilbert, who is her brother, killed her by accident, and then he started to disguise as his own sister.
  • Hugh is Oswald Stanmore's steward.
  • Eli is the college steward. 
  • Walter is Michaelhouse's porter. One night he is left some food and eats it. He almost dies as the food is poisoned. 
  • Robert Brigham is the mayor.
  • Marius Froissart is the dead man who Bartholomew finds in the belfry tower. A few days ago he had claimed sanctuary after being accused of killing his wife. Then he vanished, and the law thought that he had escaped somehow. The man was killed by Gilbert. 
  • Matilde is a former lady-in-waiting of the Earl of Oxford, and now she is a prostitued.
  • Haralda the Dane is the local locksmith.
  • Richard Tulyet, Sr, is the sheriff's father. He is the former mayor, and is a tailor. Richard is the one who talks to Bartholomew about his suspicions about de Belem.
