The novel opens with the sculptor Antonio Susilla in Seville, who has made an appointment to kill someone.
The two men meet near the river, and it is a strange encounter because at some point Susillo asks him what his name is. As the train passes, leaving both men on different sides of the tracks, two shots are heard, and Susillo dies. During all this time there are scenes in which the princess Luisa Fernanda seems to know that something is going to happen to Susillo and sends a note to the archbishop, who contacts a doctor, as the princess wants to save him.
When Susillo's body is found, two notes are found. One in which he seems to blame his young wife, claiming that he can't make this life profitable. In the other note he addresses the judge, saying that he leaves all his patrimony to his wife. Inspector Cranio is in charge of the investigation, and he discovers that Susillo was a rich man even though he didn't show it. So the novel follows Cranio as he investigates.
Apart from Susillo, in the novel Princess Luisa Fernanda is with her friend Cecilia Bohl de Faber, and she starts telling her about her life and she starts by saying how she came to be engaged to the Duke of Montpensier at the age of 14, and how this was a political movement which she had no saying in.
