The Lodger 2 (Pages 159 - 198)

SPOILERS!!!

Tom and Grace go to the public house where Sir Hugh Clifton was murdered. The woman in charge introduces herself as Mrs Alder, who is not the name of the landlady that they were hoping to see. However, it turns out that it is the same person who has remarried. Mrs Alder tells them that she is certain that Lizzy booked the room and even though she was veiled the night of the murder, she recognised her voice. What the woman lets out is that there were two men with her, but it seems that the police told her that they shouldn't muddle things when the presence of the two men was not important.

When Tom and Grace are shown the room, she knows that Elizabeth was there because she remembers seeing some drawings of this very room that Elizabeth tried to hide from her. Then they go into the pub to ask some questions, but Mr Alder tells them that they don't want any trouble and they should leave.

Grace goes to see her mother in the nursing home, and the manager tells her that her mother is refusing to take her medication and she should comply with the regulations in the institution. When Grace sees her mother, Sylvia says that she has realised that all the pills that she was bein fed had trapped her in her pain, and even though Edward's death is something that will always hurt, she wants to leave. So Grace helps her mother to discharge herself. Isobel doesn't want to go to London, and they travel to Yorkshire where they have a cottage. It is there where Isobel stays, and it seems that her husband is indifferent.

Tom starts working for Bunty as her driver, and he and Grace return to the pub, but Mrs Alder shows bruises. Her husband tells them not to bother them again because their curiosity is bringing problems for them.

Grace has discovered from the docuemtns that Lady Constancia has let her see that Elizabeth's brother-in-law testified against her. She claimed that she had been at her sister's, but her brother-in-law testified that she was never in her home. When Grace adn Tom return to the station because she wants to pick up her personal items, she discovers that another woman also committed suicide close to the point where Lizzy was found, and it was a recent thing. Grace thinks that it is a strange coincidence, and she intends to investigate this as well.
