The book starts on 16 December, and it describes someone entering room 622 in the Hotel de Verbier and finding a corpse on the floor.
The novel is told in the first person. The narrator is Joel, a writer, who decides to write a book dedicated to his publicist, the man who gave him everything he has and died recently. A new neighbour, Sloane, came to his building, and Joel found her very attractive. He knew she jogged, and he tried to go out to run at the same time, but her hours were irregular as she was a paediatrician in the hospital. Joel ran into her at the theatre, and they had a drink after the play, which started their relationship. Yet, Sloane did not understand that Joe spent too much time writing and felt neglected. When he forgot her birthday, that was the last straw. Sloane wouldn't answer his calls, and Joel had to go on a trip the next day.
When Joel returned from his trip, Madame Armanda, the building concierge, who is a big gossip, gave him a letter in which in very brief sentences, Sloane broke up with him. Joel felt lonely, especially as his assistant, Denise, was going on holiday. So that is when he decided to stay at the Hotel de Verbier, which was a place that his publicist, Bernard, loved.
Interesting start. I love the style of this author, and it is so easy to read and get into the story.
