Ben is upset when Molloy tells her that the case is closed and the conclusion is that Marguerite committed suicide. That doesn't stop her from trying to find out the truth. During the funeral she gets to meet Marguerite's daughter, Adelaide, who calls herself Abra, but she is dismissive.
When Marguerite came to see Ben, she wanted to name her next-door neighbour Simon Howard as her executor, but when Ben talks to the man, he says that he didn't know Marguerite well. The man starts pursuing Ben, and she feels drawn to him, but her main motivation is to find out more about Marguerite as she thinks that Simon isn't telling her the truth. When she runs into his son, David, he hints that Marguerite was one of his father's women. I have to say that I don't trust Simon at all, and I am afraid for Ben. More strange things have happened to her. Once when she was driving, a car forced her out of the road, leaving her mini in a sad state. And recently she got a call from her exboyfriend, the man who killed her sister, and that shakes her.
When Ben receives Marguerite's death certificate, she also gets the postmortem, and she discovers that she was pregnant and traces of a drug were found in her abdomen. Then she gets a call from the psychiatrist, Ben Quinn, who admits that Marguerite was her patient, but he confesses that he had an affair with Marguerite for eight months, something which goes against his ethical code. Ben states that the affair ended months ago, so the baby that Marguerite was expecting wasn't his. That means that she was having an affair with someone else. Ben is not off the hook as Maeve tells Ben that the night Marguerite died, she drove past her cottage and she saw Ben's car outside the house.
Phyllis, the bookshop owner, gives Ben a box with the things that Marguerite had in the shop. There is nothing much, but she finds some letters to her daughter that were returned to her, and there is a telephone bill, and she realises that there is number which Marguerite called or texted several times a day. Then when she rings the number, she gets the voice mail and realises that the nunber belongs to Aidan Doherty, one of the county counsellors. This was clearly the man who Marguerite was having an affair with. Ben learns that Aidan is the father of Hugh O'Connor, the young man who Ben is reprensenting to get him out of the charges for reckless driving, and he is married to Clodagh.
Ben gets upset when Tom comes to talk to her. He tells her that he has been to Dublin to see Laura Callan, the pathologist who was in the previous case and was key in her sister's trial. Tom confesses that he and Laura were in a relationship years ago, and before he can say anything else, Ben says that she understands that they are now back together. Before he can say anything else, she tells him to go. I don't know what Tom wanted to tell her, but I think Ben didn't hear the whole story.
What happened with Tom pushes Ben to accept Simon's invitation to spend the weekend with him in a country house near the Giant's Causeway. Everything is platonic between them, but Simon clearly wants more. What Ben wants is information about Marguerite, and all that he tells her is that one night Marguerite was upset, crying, and while he prepared tea for her, she scurried away and he found her in the bedroom naked. Simon told her to go home. Ben doesn't know if Simon is telling her the truth.
When Ben gets home, she realises that someone has broken into her house. Everything is intact, but she has the feeling that there has been someone, and she discovers that Marguerite's things are gone. Thankfully, she has the letters to her daughter in her office. Now she is thinking of going to see Adeline and hand her the letters.
The next day she receives bad news. On the ferry she had run into Iggy McDaid, who had found Marguerite's body and who Ben represents to get his driving licence back. The man was a drunkard, but on the ferry he looked sober. Leah, her assistant, tells her that Iggy died as he fell from the ferry. Ben thinks that it is a weird coincidence that Iggy also drowned.
That evening Ben feels like company, so she goes to find Simon. Nobody answers the main door, but she tries the door to his studio. The man opens the door, looking angry, and then slams the door shut in her very nose. Then Ben goes to find Maeve and they go to a pub, where they see Aidan completely drunk. Ben tries to talk to him, but he just says gibberish. Then Maeve tells her that Aidan and Iggy were friends as they both worked as blacksmiths in their youth, and even then Iggy was a drunkard, and Aidan helped him out of more than one scrape.
