We journey alongside Eleanor as her life starts changing. She and Raymond become friendly, and when they visit Sammy, his children invite them to a party to welcome him home. This visit prevents her from thaking the call from her mother, and the next day the woman calls, and she is really nasty towards her. We discover from Eleanor's thoughts that her mother is a dangerous criminal, and she didn't treat her right. The mother mentions someone else when Eleanor was hurt, and at some point Eleanor has a vague memory of combing someone else's hair, and maybe there was a sister.
Eleanor reads in a free newspaper that the musician is to perform in a club, so she decides to go. She buys some new clothes and shoes with the help of an assistant because she is socially awkward. Then when she tries to get into the club, there are no tickets left. So she tells herself that their encounter will have to be on another occasion.
Eleanor and Raymond go to the party that Sammy's children have thrown. Even though this is not her thing, she is okay with it. Feeling bored, she comes into the garden, and Raymond is there, having a smoke. Eleanor has noticed that Raymond likes Laura, Sammy's daughter, who is a very attractive woman, and she tells him so. Raymond says that Laura is gorgeous, but she is not his type. Then he tells her that he had a relationship for three years and even wanted to marry her, but she left him, claiming that it was her problem. This makes Eleanor say that she had a boyfriend who used to beat her up for three years. The relationship ended when he threw her down the stairs, and a nurse in hospital did not believe her when she said she had had a fall, and she made her see that nobody had any right to hit her. When she went back to her apartment, he refused to go, so she called the police. Poor Eleanor. The more we know about her past, the more we realise how much she has suffered.
