SPOILERS!!!
Charlotte, Emily, Jack and Gracie discover the owner of all the tenements that Mrs Shaw was involved with. To their surprise, they find out that those dilapidated buildings belong to the late bishop, Clemency's grandfather, and she must have discovered it as well. That is confirmed by her husband, and he tells Charlotte that Clemency then gave all her money away.
The problem is that they are not close to finding out who killed Clemency and Amos. One theory is that Clemency was killed because of what she could reveal, and Amos was killed because he had discovered who the killer was or because it was a way to cover the truth. Another theory is that the intended victim is Dr Shaw.
Charlotte and Thomas keep talking to everybody, and nothing seems to help. The moment of revelation comes during Amos's funeral lunch when Dr Shaw delivers a speech. He talks about who the real Amos was, and he says how he hates hypocrisy. Then he voices his father-in-law's death and how there may be reason to believe that he was not alone when he died and maybe the person who was with him was his blackmailer. Then the vicar, Mr Clitheridge, confesses that Theophilius summoned him and when he got there, he was very nervous and upset, and he wanted to give him money. Clitheridge was afraid of him, and he fled, and then Theophilius died. Dr Shaw realises after this confession that what Theophilius realised was that he was dying, so he wanted to redeem himself by giving away money to the church. He was aware that the origin of his father's fortune was the poor people who lived in those run-down tenements. When Dr Shaw reveals the ugly face of the bishop, his brother-in-law, Josiah Hatch, attacks him, revealing that he should have killed him before. He then reveals that he was the one who killed Clemency and Amos, and Thomas and Murdo manage to pull him from Dr Shaw and he is arrested.
This was an interesting mystery, and what I liked most was the addition of Gracie to the plot.
