Regular characters:

• Inspector Thomas Pitt is the main character. His parents were in service, but when his father was accused of robbery, a crime the man didn’t commit, Thomas was determined to find justice, and that  is the reason why he became a policeman. From the first moment he saw Charlotte, he fell in love with  her, and now he is extremely happy to have her as his wife. They have a daughter, Jemima, and a son, Daniel. Thomas is an excellent inspector and doesn’t give up until he finds out the truth. In his relationship with Charlotte, he is quite open-minded as Charlotte is not the typical stay-at-home wife. He often disapproves of her interest in his cases, but he knows he can’t tell her she can’t do something.
• Charlotte Pitt is the second daughter of well-off parents. Her main characteristic is that she always says what is on her mind and has no problems in being straightforward and frank about anything. Before meeting Thomas, she was  in love with Dominic, her late sister’s husband, but in the first book she realised it was just infatuation. Charlotte is married to Inspector Pitt and they have a daughter, Jemima, and a son, Daniel. Charlotte is determined and helps her husband to find out information about the cases he works on.
• Emily Ashworth Radley (30) is Charlotte’s younger sister. Emily is sly and clever. She was married to Lord George Ashworth, but he was murdered in a previous book, and then she married Jack Radley.  Emily has a son, Edward. Emily doesn’t hesitate to leave everything and help her sister whenever she needs her.
• Jack Radley is Emily's new husband. He has no money, but he loves Emily dearly. Jack intends to go into politics and fight against injustices.
• Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould (74) is George Ashworth’s great aunt. Lady Cummings is the kind of woman who does what she wants without caring much about what society dictates.When Thomas Pitt first met her, he thought – and still thinks – that Charlotte would be like Vespasia in her old age. Charlotte and Vespasia get on very well, and Vespasia often invites her to her tea parties whenever she needs the opinion of an intelligent woman like Charlotte is. She also helps Charlotte whenever she needs to be introduced to someone in society. Vespasia is a widow, and she has grandchildren from her late daughter, Olivia.
• Gracie (16) is Charlotte and Thomas’s maid. In this book Charlotte asks Gracie to accompany her to go detecting and Gracie is delighted. Gracie is clever and hard-working. 
• Micah Drummond (49) is Thomas’s boss. Unlike his predecessor, Drummond is sensible and likes Thomas very much. Drummond offers Thomas a promotion, which he eventually refuses because he can’t see himself behind a desk, and Drummond understands his decision.
• Jemima Pitt is Charlotte and Thomas’s six-year-old daughter.
• Daniel Pitt is Charlotte and Thomas’s four-year-old son.
• Somerset Carlisle is a Member of Parliament.  He is a fervent supporter of a bill to change the conditions in the workhouses, and Charlotte and Emily go to him because they need help about law.
• Caroline Ellison (52) is Charlotte’s mother. Caroline knew that Charlotte’s frankness and determination made her unmarriageable, so she was happy for her to marry a policeman. Yet, Charlotte and Thomas do not socialise with Caroline too much. In a previous book Caroline was infatuated with Paul Alaric and Charlotte made her see that it was foolish to lose her heart to someone like him. Now Caroline is widowed after her husband died from a short disease.
• Grandmama Ellison is Charlotte’s grandmother, and she lives with her daughter-in-law, Caroline. The woman is cantankerous and rude, and she doesn’t have any compunction to say what she thinks. Whenever Charlotte sees her, the woman doesn’t make her forget what she thinks of her marrying Thomas.
• Maddock is the Ellisons’ butler.
• Percival is Emily's driver. 
• Arthur is Jack's footman.
• Lord George Ashworth was Emily’s husband. He had the typical traits of aristocracy: vain, flirtatious, greedy… In a previous book George was murdered.
• Chief Superintendent Dudley Athelson is Pitt’s superior. He is a horrible man who gives a hard time to Pitt.
• Meddows is a police surgeon
• Cutler is a police surgeon.
• Paul Alaric is the man who Caroline was infatuated with. Paul made his first appearance in Paragon Walk, where he lives, and several ladies were attracted to him. Paul is French, but he is a mystery. When in the book in which he first appeared Thomas investigated him as a suspect, the French police notified him that there was nobody under that name in their records. So maybe Paul Alaric is not even his real name. Will we reappear in another book? Maybe. Paul Alaric also makes Charlotte nervous because she feels the attraction the man has.
• Constable Harris is the policeman who Thomas usually works with.
• Edward Ashworth is Emily and George’s five-year-old son
• Millicent is Emily’s maid.
• Dominic Corde is Charlotte’s brother-in-law. Charlotte was in love with him for years when she was younger, but then she realised it was just infatuation, and she fell in love with Thomas. Dominic lost his wife when the murderer in the first book killed Sarah.
• Edward Ellison was Charlotte’s father.

Characters in this book:

• Constable James Murdo (24) is a local policeman that helps Pitt in this case. During the investigation he falls for Flora Lutterworth, but he knows his position. Yet, on one occasion Flora tells him that if he wants to talk about the crimes, they could have a walk and have a lemonade. So maybe Flora is drawn to him as well. 
• Clemency Shaw is the woman who died in the fire of her house. Someone set the house of fire on purpose. Clemency was a charitable woman who intended to find out who the owners of the rundown tenements were and expose them. That was the motive that Charlotte thought could have been the reason why she was killed. In reality, the intended victim was her husband.
• Dr Stephen Shaw was Clemency's husband, and it turned out that the killer intended to kill him because he was against Clemency's grandfather, the bishop.
• Amos Lindsay was a neighbour in the area and Dr Shaw's best friend. He had travelled during his youth, and he had married an African woman and had children with her. Yet, she died, and the children still live in Africa. Amos dies when his house is also set fire to. 
• Quinten Pascoe is another neighbour. He is against John Dalgetty for his innovative ideas, and they even fight in a duel.
• John Dalgetty is another neighbour. He sells books and review literature, and he also writes about society and changes in it.
• Maude Dalgetty is John Dalgetty's wife. Charlotte is told that Maude used to be a model for artists until she met Dalgetty and they were married. 
• Alfred Lutterworth is another neighbour who made his fortune in cotton. He was hostile to Dr Shaw because he suspected that he had designs on his daughter, but the girl finally told him that she only went there for a health problem she wanted to keep private. 
• Alice is a tweenie working for Lutterworth. She claimed to have seen a ghost moving outside the night Clemency died.
• Flora Lutteworth is Alfred's daughter. There were rumours that she saw too much of Dr Shaw and was in love with him. Yet, she explains to her father she had a health problem that she wanted to keep private. Flora is the girl who Constable Murdo falls for, and she seems to like him as well. 
• Reverend Hector Clitheridge is the vicar, and at the end of the book he confesses that he was present the night Theophilus Worlingham died. The man was upset and intended to give him money, but Clitheridge got scared and fled.
• Eulalia Clitheridge is the vicar's wife, and it seems that she liked Dr Shaw too much. She is hostile towards Charlotte when she sees that Dr Shaw and Charlotte are friendly to each other.
• Josiah Hatch is Clemency's brother-in-law. His admiration of his wife's grandfather, the bishop, annoys Dr Shaw, who knows the real face of the late bishop. Josiah is the one who sets fire to Dr Shaw's and Amos's hosues because he wanted to kill Dr Shaw because of his opinions about the bishop.
• Prudence Hatch is Josiah's wife and Clemency's sister. Charlotte discovers that Prudence writes romance novels, which she keeps hidden from his staid husband. 
• Theophilus Worlingham was Clemency and Prudence's father. He did two years ago of an apoplexy, but Dr Shaw was accused of neglect. When the man was found, there were budlens of notes in his desk drawer and he also had notes in his hand. 
• Celeste Worlingham was Clemency's aunt. She is cold and forbiding. She never married because she was expected to look after her father.
• Angeline Worlingham is Celeste's sister. She also remained single to serve her father.
• Bishop Augustus Warlingham died ten years ago and he was a respected member of society. He was rich, and Clemency discovered that the source of his fortune was the rent that poor people paid for living in terrible tenements. That is what Charlotte also discovered.
• Matthew Oliphant is the curate in the vicarage. He is a kind man, and Clemency left him her beautiful bible. Charlotte guessed that Clemency loved Oliphant in secret. 
• Bessie Jones is a girl who lived in terrible circumstances with her family.
• Lady Priscilla is a woman Emily visited to try to find out the identity of those powerful men owning tenements. Emily came to her with a story about trying to make money, and the woman told her that it is common practice to buy property and get the profits, using companies.
• Tom Thicket is the rent collector in the tenements.
• Fred Buffery is the manager who collected the money from Thicket.
